A former staff writer for Congressional Quarterly in Washington, D.C., his work has appeared in many magazines and newspapers, including Civil War Times, America's Civil War, Vietnam, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The New York Times Book Review, The Wall Street Journal, The Baltimore Sun, the Chicago Tribune, and USA Today. He lives in Middleburg, Virginia.
