Paul Young es de nacionalidad canadiense de origen, y junto con sus tres hermanos menores creció en medio de una tribu de la Edad de Piedra al lado de sus padres, quienes eran misioneros en las tierras altas de la antigua Nueva Guinea (Papúa occidental). De niño y como joven adulto sufrió grandes pérdidas, pero ahora disfruta con su familia de la "vastedad de la gracia", en la costa noroeste de Estados Unidos.
