David Wheeler interessiert sich Zeit seines Lebens für Pflanzen und sämtliche Gartenaspekte. Er schreibt regelmäßig für das Magazin Country Life; neben mehreren Anthologien veröffentlichte er Over the Hills from Broadway: Images of Cotswold Gardens. Er gründete 1987 die vierteljährlich erscheinende unabhängige Gartenzeitschrift HORTUS, deren Chefredakteur er ist. Zusammen mit dem Künstler und Gartengestalter Simon Dorrell pflegt er einen weitläufigen Garten mit Arboretum an der Grenze zu Wales.
