2017 Washington State Book Award finalist, based on the strength of its literary merit and lasting importance!

The Ocean is calling me. This is my Journey.

With these words, in the spring of 2010, Susan Marie Conrad scaled her world down to an 18-foot sea kayak and launched a solo journey that took her north to Alaska. With no sense of where she belonged in space and unreconciled feelings of a painful childhood following her, she decided that instead of running away, she would run toward her dreams. Her adventure took her along the western coast of North America, through the Inside Passage-a 1,200-mile ribbon of water-in a journey of the sea and soul.

The expedition took her deep within herself, humbling her, healing her, helping her to discover the depths of her own strength and courage. On her way from Anacortes, Washington, to Juneau, Alaska, she grappled with fear and exhaustion, forged friendships with quirky people in the strangest places, endured perilous weather and angry seas, and pretended not to be intimidated by 700-pound grizzly bears and 40-ton whales.

She lived her dream.

Autorenporträt
Susan Conrad is a classically shy introvert trapped in an extrovert personality, as well as a long-distance paddler who can't be left alone in the same room with dark chocolate. She grew up in New York State's Catskill Mountains, evolving into a rough 'n tumblealthough quite clumsytomboy with minimal athletic ability. Her parents tried to instill a deep fear of water in her so she's convinced that a combination of sheer stubbornness, rebellion and naiveté eventually led her to solo paddle the 1,200-mile water trail known as the Inside Passage, which winds its way from Washington State to Alaska.

Her journey was a profoundly life-changing experience and Susan loves sharing her fears, epiphanies, and lessons learned with others to empower them to truly 'get' that they are infinitely capable of accomplishing anything they want in life! Passionate about the positive impact that adventure and sport can have on the lives of women, Susan is an ambassador for Women Who Paddle, and uses her human-powered journeys as a platform to inspire and enable women to get outside, and get exploring. She's also an EXPED adventure ambassador and sponsored athlete. In addition to Wildly Inside, Susan has penned two other books about the Inside Passage: Inside; One Woman's Journey Through the Inside Passage, a five-time award-winning memoir, and Inside my Sea of Dreams, a children's book inspiring young readers (ages 4-9) to follow their dreams and believe in themselves.
