An interesting old school science fiction tale. A page turner for the avid science fiction reader. From the book: Suddenly I became aware of a flickering light above me. I looked up. I had thought that the lights were winking, but they were not. The room was lit by a reading lamp, and the ceiling was so shadowy that at first I could see nothing at all. Then I saw the light-or the ghost of a light-gleaming faintly upon-or through-the ceiling. It was the faintest yellow, neither a bull's eye nor a splotch. Instead, it seemed to be a tiny whirlpool of movement-the faintest nebula in miniature with spirals of light swiftly circling a central core. For a second I thought I could see through the roof, and the stars swarmed before me. It was as though I was at the vortex of a high whirlwind of dancing, shining specks of light. Then that sensation was gone, and there were two faint coiling spirals of yellow light upon the ceiling. The lights began to whisper. (Goodreads)

Autorenporträt
Joseph Everidge Kelleam (1913-1975), an American writer hailing from Boswell, Oklahoma, made a significant mark in the realm of science fiction. His literary journey commenced with the publication of his maiden story, "Rust," in Astounding Science Fiction in 1939, heralding the beginning of a prolific writing career. Among his notable contributions are several compelling novels, showcasing his talent for weaving captivating narratives within the realm of speculative fiction. In 1956, Kelleam introduced readers to "Overlords From Space," a novel published by Ace Books, which was bound dos-à-dos with Ray Cummings' "The Man Who Mastered Time." Subsequently, in 1960, Avalon published two more of his novels: "The Little Men" and "Hunters of Space." The latter, serialized as "Hunters Out of Space," graced the pages of Amazing Stories, further solidifying Kelleam's reputation as a skilled storyteller within the science fiction genre. In 1966, Avalon released another of Kelleam's imaginative works titled "When the Red King Woke," adding another layer to his literary legacy. With each novel, Kelleam transported readers to worlds filled with wonder, mystery, and adventure, leaving an enduring imprint on the landscape of science fiction literature.
