Dr. Lies was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 4, 1926. His early years were spent in Brooklyn and Freeport, Long Island. At age ten, the family moved to his grandmother's farm in Southwest Georgia, near Cuthbert, Georgia, where he finished high school. He enrolled in Duke University and Duke University's medical school and received his MD degree at age twenty-one. His residency training was completed at Duke Hospital and Long Island College Hospital. He began solo practice of pediatrics in May 1953 and was incorporated in Dothan Pediatric Clinic in 1968. He practiced for fifty years, retiring in 2003. Since and before retirement, he has been involved with many hobbies, including wood and metal work, duplicate bridge, and writing. He remains quite active but can no longer continue his wood and metal work hobby.
