Sir John proceeds to prove Martella's innocence and prevent her execution for a crime she did not commit. He accomplishes this by enlisting the help of his stage manager and his wife. The novel inspired two films in 1930: Murder! and Mary. Alfred Hitchcock directed both of these films in the German language.
