Eventually Julia has a few frightening encounters and she must flee the island. Will decides to accompany her as she seeks haven in several European cities but her pursuers follow. On the way, a new viral pandemic seems to have connections to her work. Through their fear and narrow escapes, Julia and Will develop a closer relationship, though each struggle with memories of their past relationships. Julia's sense of responsibility compels her to seek a way to counteract the virus and to fight back against the perpetrators of the pandemic. Their story culminates in a violent climax as Will must make a difficult decision to protect Julia.
