Hugo Laurenz August Hofmann, Edler von Hofmannsthal (genannt Hugo von Hofmannsthal; * 1. Februar 1874 in Wien; 15. Juli 1929 in Rodaun bei Wien) war ein österreichischer Schriftsteller, Dramatiker, Lyriker, Librettist sowie Mitbegründer der Salzburger Festspiele. Er gilt als einer der wichtigsten Repräsentanten des deutschsprachigen Fin de Siècle und der Wiener Moderne.Hugo von Hofmannsthal hatte böhmische, jüdische und lombardische Vorfahren. Sein jüdisch-orthodoxer Urgroßvater Isaak Löw Hofmann (17591849) wurde als erfolgreicher Industrieller 1835 von Ferdinand I. geadelt. Er hatte die Seidenindustrie in Österreich eingeführt und für seine große Familie ein ansehnliches Vermögen geschaffen. Sein Sohn und Erbe Augustin Emil von Hofmannsthal (18151881) konvertierte zum katholischen Glauben und heiratete 1850 die bürgerliche Italienerin Petronilla Ordioni (18151898).
