Autorenporträt

Horatio Walpole, englischer Schriftsteller, Kunsthistoriker, Literat, Antiquar und Whig-Politiker, ließ Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham im Südwesten Londons errichten und belebte den gotischen Stil einige Jahrzehnte vor seinen viktorianischen Nachfolgern wieder. Sein literarischer Ruf beruht auf dem ersten gotischen Roman, The Castle of Otranto (1764), und seinen Briefen, die von großem sozialem und politischem Interesse sind. Sie wurden von Yale University Press in 48 Bänden veröffentlicht. 2017 wurde ein Band mit ausgewählten Briefen Walpoles veröffentlicht. Als jüngster Sohn des ersten britischen Premierministers, Sir Robert Walpole, 1. Earl of Orford, wurde er nach dem Tod seines Neffen 1791 der 4. und letzte Earl of Orford der zweiten Generation.
