Chapter 1: Introduction

Atoms are the smallest particles of an element. Each atom is made up of a nucleus and one or more electrons. Electronics is a branch of physics that studies the behavior of electrons. Electrons are the carriers of electrical charges inside an atom. They are located in the outermost shell of the atom, known as the valence shell. Electrons move freely through atoms and thus chemical bonds are formed, which are the basis of matter. Electric current is a flow of electrons through a conducting material. Electricity is a natural phenomenon that occurs when there is a movement of electrons. Electricity is a form of energy that can be used in many ways. For example, to turn on a lamp, run a machine, or move an object. The presence of electrical current is conventionally represented as a 1 (on) and its absence as a 0 (off). This is the basis of computing.
