Die Frau im Krankenhausbett hätte tot sein können . . . Ist sie aber nicht. Nur durch die perfide Operation des Täters in einen quasi leblosen Zustand versetzt. Davor: Entführung, Demütigung, Folter. Eine Horrorvision, selbst für die Ermittler. Die Medulla oblongata wird die Frau weiter mit dem nötigen Sauerstoff versorgen und ihr Herz am Schlagen halten. Aber sie wird nicht mehr empfinden, denken, reagieren. Von komplexen Apparaturen am Leben erhalten, eingesperrt in einem dunklen Gefängnis. Achtundzwanzig, braune Haare, braune Augen – die man nicht sieht, weil sie zugeschwollen sind. Der Schädel zeigt keine Narben, die Lobotomie wurde durch die Augenhöhlen ausgeführt.
  Winter in London, kurz vor Weihnachten. Es ist das vierte Opfer, weitere dürften in Kürze folgen. Scotland Yard ist hilflos, deshalb hat man Jefferson Winter aus Amerika in die Stadt geholt, Ex-FBI-Mann, jetzt unabhängig und Spezialist für Serientäter. Ein Super-Profiler. Zusammen mit Inspektor Mark Hatcher soll er den Wahnsinnigen aufspüren. Winter hat, fürwahr, ein ganz besonderes Verhältnis zur Serienmörderei.
  Ein böser trostloser kleiner Krimi. Die Logik des Profilers ist eiskalt und nutzt souverän alle ermittlungstechnischen Möglichkeiten – selbst die totale Überwachung kommt einem in diesem Prozess gar nicht mehr suspekt vor. Emotionales dringt selten durch, wird aber schnell weggepackt. „Mein letzter Gedanke, bevor der Schlaf mich übermannte, galt dem fünften Opfer. Wir hatten keine Ahnung, wer die Frau war, aber eins wusste ich sicher: dass sie in diesem Augenblick einsamer war als je zuvor in ihrem Leben. Einsam und in einem Albtraum gefangen.“
  Ein patriarchalischer Krimi, in der klassischen Heldentradition. Zwei Männer sind bemüht, eine junge Frau zu retten. Selbst der Täter zeigt eine kalkulierte Mischung aus Grausamkeit und Fürsorge. Für den finalen Kampf stattet der Vater des Opfers Inspektor und Profiler aus. „Er hatte eine gute Wahl getroffen. Die M1911 gehörte zu meinen bevorzugten Handfeuerwaffen . . .“
