The young Bruce Arnold is a cattleman who takes the reins and responsibility of his parents' cattle station in north Queensland's dry tropics. He needs to juggle a large debt, the expenses of a station in unpredictable conditions and still derive a comfortable living.

It's a roller coaster ride both for the business and his personal life. In among learning and applying new science to his breeding program and farm management, his mum gets diagnosed with cancer, a young boy goes missing and he navigates the unchartered territory of romance in the bush.

Autorenporträt

Geoffry Fordyce hails from north Australia's beef cattle and sugar cane country. After completing a veterinary science degree, augmented with postgraduate study, research of beef cattle systems, especially of reproducing cattle in the tropical world, has been his life's work. Geoffry most recently worked for the University of Queensland and collaborated with beef business operators and other scientists across northern Australia, Indonesia and Timor-Leste, ultimately developing new business practices that can improve the profitability of beef systems, while also having significant welfare benefits for the animals, the environment and the people. His endeavours resulted in him being awarded the inaugural medal for Excellence in Research by the North Australian Beef Research Council in 2006. In 2021, Geoffry was bestowed with a prestigious Honorary Doctor of Science degree by James Cook University in recognition of his contributions to the international cattle industry and rural communities. Geoffry has hundreds of scientific publications, highlighted by almost 80 papers in international peer-review science journals (eg, doi.org/10.1071/AN20342) and a few books. 'Breeding' is Geoffry's first expedition into fiction writing. Geoffry lives outside Charters Towers with his wife, Linda, continuing his work through his small business, GALF Cattle.
