The book is based on articles written by Kropotkin for the French newspapers Le Révolté (Rebel) and La Révolte (Rebellion). The book was first published in French in France in 1892 under the heading "The Conquest of Bread." The book describes Kropotkin's vision of how a social revolution could have taken place on the basis of anarchist communism, and criticizes the political and economic system that existed in his time. The "conquest of bread" played a prominent role in the consolidation of anarchist militias during the Spanish Civil War, and also inspired anarchist history, theory and practice throughout the 20th century. After the failure of Marxist-Leninist practice in the Soviet Union, some thinkers began to consider the book prophetic, because Kropotkin foresaw the many traps and human rights violations that could occur in a socialist society. After the financial crisis of 2007-2008, David Greber, one of the intellectual leaders of the Occupy movement, directly quoted Kropotkin as a source of inspiration for the world that the Occupy protesters tried to create.
