This volume presents the first systematic examination of characteristics, meaning and function of farewell letters of the dying in the 18th century. Examples from literary, journalistic and scientific publications in various languages confirm that there are significant similarities between fictional and real historical farewell letters. The authors discussed include Elizabeth Rowe, Gellert, Richardson, Rousseau, Sophie La Roche, Spieß and Goethe.
