He was instated on February 2, 2000.As the speaker of parliament, he was also serving as the acting President of the Republic, due to the death of President Franjo Tu man. He gave up the position of acting president on February 18, 2000, when the newly elected president Stipe Mesi took office.Tom i remained President of the Parliament until December 2003, following new elections where the party lost seats and went into the opposition. Tom i did, however, keep a seat in the Parliament.
