He started being very interested in jazz music and, around 12 years old, he reproduced the music he heard on his parents' LPs. He attended the Havana School of Arts and Music. In 1995, he started to perform regularly at the Cuervo and at the Zorra, two clubs in Havana. Later, he traveled to New York, was invited to attend a scholarship at the Juilliard School of Music. In 1997, Roy Hargrove, a American jazz trumpeter gave him his first trumpet and Silva started to play in various jam sessions in the city.
