"In the wee hours of the morning of April 9th, 1940, while I was sound asleep, I was awakened by a loud noise. I thought 'That is funny. Why is the threshing machine on that early in the morning?' "In the wee hours of the morning of April 9th, 1940, while I was sound asleep, I was awakened by a loud noise. I thought 'That is funny. Why is the threshing machine on that early in the morning?' So I went to my window, and what did I see? Airplanes. Millions of them! They flew right over the farm where I worked. They flew so low I could read the numbers on them. And they kept coming and coming and coming." When World War II finally reached the peaceful country of Denmark, Vera Jorgensen was twenty one years old and just starting out in life. Decades later she tells her stories to her family from the comfort of her Little Red School-House. Stories of how they evaded capture by German soldiers and went into hiding. Stories of what every day life was like when you are raising a family in the middle of a war.
Autorenporträt
Dana Woodard was born and raised in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. She didn't grow up intending to write any books. In fact she just wanted to do her crafts, read her books, and play her video games. Both as a child and as an adult she had heard the stories her Farmor had told her about the war and about living on the farm and she knew that once Farmor had passed on there was a danger of those stories being lost. Some family members had tape recorded some of the stories and others had written some down. But Dana wanted to bring all those stories together in one place that her family could share.
