Yank Shi est né en Chine en 1941. Il a travaillé comme enseignant dans une université de Yantai en Chine pendant 14 ans. Il a obtenu une maîtrise en linguistique à l'Université Fudan de Shanghai en 1982. Yank Shi a travaillé comme professeur d'anglais à l'Institut des langues étrangères de Dalian pendant 4 ans, est arrivé aux États-Unis en 1986 et a obtenu une maîtrise en linguistique et une maîtrise. des beaux-arts à l'Université du Colorado à Boulder. Il a dirigé une entreprise manufacturière liée aux semi-conducteurs pendant 20 ans et est aujourd'hui à la retraite.
