Efficient use of water is crucial for the survival of the ever increasing population of the world. It can be done by adopting improved water management approaches like moisture conservation practices (e.g. mulching) & replacing traditional methods of irrigation with modern one. Efficient use of water is crucial for the survival of the ever increasing population of the world. It can be done by adopting improved water management approaches like moisture conservation practices (e.g. mulching) & replacing traditional methods of irrigation with modern one. In above context, a water management study was carried out to assess the response of summer sesame crop (oilseed crop growing most extensively in India) to mulching and irrigation methods i.e. surface (border), subsurface (porous pipe irrigation), drip irrigation(with different combinations of dripper discharge/spacings & lateral spacings) . Various components of efficient micro irrigation system like selection of dripper discharge/spacings & lateral spacings, optimum design lay out and irrigation scheduling was done based on surface wetting front movement. Crop response was evaluated in terms of crop parameter, weed intensity, water use efficiency & economic viability. I hope this book will serve as a guideline for irrigation engineers, policy makers and researchers to develop an efficient irrigation strategy for crop production with modification according to crop, climate and soil.
