Alfred Russell Wallace (1823 - 1913) wurde in Usk, Monmouthshire geboren. Er arbeitete zunächst als Landvermesser, Zeichner und Kartograph. In Leicester machte er Bekanntschaft mit Henry Bates, der Wallaces Sammel- und Leseleidenschaft sowie dessen Begeisterung für die Reiseberichte Humboldts und Darwins teilte. Zusammen reisten sie 1848 nach Brasilien, erkundeten das Amazonasbecken, sammelten dort lebende Tierarten und machten diverse Aufzeichnungen. Wallace reiste 1852 zurück nach England und veröffentlichte seine Notizen. 1854 begab er sich für weitere Sammelarbeiten auf eine achtjährige Reise in den Malayischen Archipel, während der er seine Gedanken zur natürlichen Selektion niederschrieb. Darwin starb am 7. November 1913 in Broadstone, Dorset.
