The deformation needs to be minimized and the designer should know before hand the extent of deformation so that it can be accounted for in the design as well as in the construction stages. The deformation needs to be minimized and the designer should know before hand the extent of deformation so that it can be accounted for in the design as well as in the construction stages. Deformation takes place due to nonuniform thermal expansion and plastic yielding. It depends on various factors such as plate thickness, welding speed, heat input, material properties etc. In this present work a computationally efficient solution strategy for 3-D transient analysis of thermal and subsequent mechanical response due to submerged arc welding has been presented. The welding heat flow problem has been solved by using centre difference implicit scheme to obtain the temperature profile. The problem was solved considering temperature dependent material properties, Newton's convection boundary conditions and a simplified heat source model. The entire code has been written in C environment. The case of bead-on-plate welding of 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm and 12 mm thick mild steel plates have been taken for experimental and numerical analysis.
