The book uses national and public opinion data to investigate state failure, state legitimacy and citizens sense of national identity in selected new democracies in Africa. The book tests the duality argument between Urban and Rural Africa in constitutionalism and national identity and uses advanced statistical techniques that account for the local, ethnic and regional variations in public opinion across nations. It concludes with relevant lessons for democratic sustainability and the democratization of the customary sector in Africa.
