An illustrated book for children based on the life and adventures of Tom Crean, the Irish explorer who served on three expeditions to Antarctica in the early 20th Century. With 27 colour illustrations, 4 colour maps and an interactive section included, the book is an educative and entertaining insight into the journeys of Tom Crean. Awarded the Albert Medal for bravery in 1913, Crean's heroic exploits are legendary yet have remained little known outside of those in the Polar community. His is a story of hardship, escape and triumph over adversities in the most unforgiving terrain on our planet. Written for children aged 6-10 years, the story is inspiring, fun, and sometimes sad and is a great introduction to the incredible tale of a real-life hero who children will warm to. Adapted for children from the biography, Crean - The Extraordinary Life of an Irish Hero, the book which gave rise to a revision of Tom Crean's timeline in the Dictionary of Irish Biography, Tom The Mighty Explorer is a fact-based account that provides a great insight into the history of an era in which world firsts were eagerly sought by explorers of the age who could only achieve glory with men such as Crean alongside them.
Autorenporträt
Since 2010, Manchester-born author TIm Foley was the driving force of a campaign to honour Tom Crean, an Irish explorer who served under Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton on three pioneering expeditions to Antarctica in the early part of the 20th century. From a young age Tim had been left fascinated by the heroic tales of Tom Crean, whose story he discovered while spending much of his time in his father's birthplace of County Kerry, Ireland. Over the course of his career, a number of publications have featured Tim's work and in 2017 he decided to utilise his many years of research and study the life of Tom Crean in order to begin the process of compiling his biography of the legendary Antarctic Explorer. In 2021, after submitting all of his research sources to the Royal Irish Academy, major revisions were made to the official story of Tom Crean in the world-respected Dictionary of Irish Biography. A fully-illustrated children's book titled 'Tom The Mighty Explorer' followed, the reviews of which have been excellent. The campaign, dedicated to achieving official recognition for the Annascaul born explorer, proved a success and its goal was achieved in January 2021 when it was announced that a scientific vessel was to be named in Crean's honour. After many years in research, the biography, 'Crean - The Extraordinary Life of an Irish Hero', was published and released by Merrion Press in 2023,Tim continues to write with a great passion for the subject he is the foremost expert on - Tom Crean and he regularly posts to the Tom Crean Blog on his website tomcreanbook.com
