As a child, she loved to read but hated Chinese school: there was too much rote memorisation and not enough fun. When her daughter turned 3, Deborah wanted to find Chinese/bilingual books like her beloved English children's classics: books with captivating stories and vivid characters told in everyday language. But books like that were very difficult to find. So many are written for Mandarin speakers, assumed she could read and write fluently, or used standard written Chinese which is so different from spoken Cantonese that it might as well be another language. It was hard to help her daughter love a story when she had to keep stopping to look up the words. So she wrote one they could read together...without a dictionary!
