She began her career writing novels, but it wasn't until 1922, when her first children's story, The Velveteen Rabbit, was published, that she found lasting literary success. Her young-adult novel Winterbound (1936) was a runner-up for the Newbery Medal in 1937 and later received the Newbery Honor.
