Produktbeschreibung
The much discussed notion of postliberal theology developed from the writings of two theologians at Yale University, Hans Frei and George Lindbeck. In The Trial of the Witnesses, Paul J. DeHart provides a thorough analysis and critique of postliberal theology, beginning with an examination of the intellectual context of Frei and Lindbeck's thought and the controversies to which their work has given rise. The book scrutinizes the dogmatic underpinnings of Frei and Lindbeck's understandings of theology and investigates the key concepts taken from their work which have been used to construct the idea of postliberalism. The author finds the sharp opposition between "revisionist" and "postliberal" modes of theology conceptually incoherent and misleading. He argues that the contributions of both Frei and Lindbeck are distorted by the prevalent tendency to interpret them through these categories. In conclusion, he outlines an alternative understanding of Christian faith and its cultural transactions, and a different configuration of the task of theology, which together enable him to reconceptualize these thinkers' contributions to contemporary theological discussion.

Rezensionen
"The book's maincontribution thus lies less in its analysis of Lindbeck's andFrei's theology than in its suggestive insights as to what aliberal theology after postliberalism might look like". (TheJournal of SJT, Volume 64/1, 2011)

"The Trialof the Witnesses is a truly exciting book thatpoints to new ways of conceiving of and doing theology, both in itsdisruption of the terms of the postliberal debate and in it"modeling of a "thicker" form of textual analysis." (TheJournal of Religion,2009)

"DeHart's The Trial of the Witnesses is both the most profoundanalysis to date of the so-called 'Yale School,' and a brilliantattempt to rehabilitate the distinctive theological approach ofHans Frei. But, more than that, it is also a highly suggestive andilluminating constructive proposal in its own right."
Faith and Theology

" DeHart sees postliberalism as a river whose future is in themany smaller streams of the delta it formed. Others may regard thevery idea of a genuine and contained school of thought at Yale asoverblown or parochial, seeing this school's contributions as partof a much bigger river flowing through 20th-century theology."Choice

"Engaging and insightful exploration ... .Vividpresentation of ... both cultural and scholastic contexts. Thisbook is valuable for scholars and graduate students alike."Religious Studies Review
