Produktbeschreibung
This fascinating study explores the critical "Volksstücke" of Franz Xaver Kroetz as they confront the crisis of contemporary West German theater in representing social reality and effecting social change. Focusing particularly on problems of intention and reception, the author undertakes a detailed analysis of representative plays from "Männersache" to "Furcht und Hoffnung der BRD". What emerges is an aesthetic model which subverts the very forms it employs, and derives its effectiveness from the tension between word and image, identification and distance, self-reflection and political commitment. Offering an interpretation which sees in Kroetz's plays a radical attempt to rescue the communicative and utopian dimensions of the theater, this study yields insight into the limits and possibilities of the Kroetzian "Volksstück", and locates it firmly within the context of contemporary aesthetic concerns.
Rezensionen
"A subtle mapping of the development of one of today's leading playwrights - sound and well-written throughout." (Ingo Seidler, University of Michigan)
"Die Autorin überzeugt, angefangen bei ihrer souveränen Kenntnis und Handhabung der Sekundärliteratur, durch ihren präzis artikulierten und eleganten Schreibstil; doch auch was sie inhaltlich in den zehn Kapiteln zu bieten hat, setzt zweifellos neue Akzente in der Kroetz-Forschung. Ihre Analysen gehen über eine Darstellung evidenter Sozialkritik weit hinaus..." (Frank Pilipp, Coloquia Germanica)
"øThe author's! analysis of several representative plays is wonderfully detailed and always insightful. Walther provides us with a most illuminating account of the historical 'difference' øKroetz! made in complicating the political identity of German theatre." (Karl Toepfer, Seminar)
"Walther's 'Theater of Franz Xaver Kroetz' can be highly recommended... Walther's study represents a major breakthrough in Kroetz scholarship and it deserves a wide audience." (Susan L. Cocalis, Modern Drama)
