This master's thesis aims to analyze the thought of João Calvino with a focus on his vision of political power. It is the study of several texts, but with the work Institution of Christian Religion as the main source. The work is dedicated to the investigation of the thought of the French scholar as to what political power is, as well as what its functions are, who is instituted of this authority, what interventions could exist in it and from it. Similarly, the work is dedicated to the debate about the possibility of resistance to the ruler. At this moment, the work presents an analysis of what would be the function and the foundation of the authority of the rulers according to the author, if there is a prohibition to resist the ruler according to his thought or not, and if there can be some exception to the position defended by him. Still, the proposal is to analyze also some important aspects that relate to the theme within the ideas of the reformer, as is the case of morality.
