Sebastian Brant, 1457 Straßburg - 10. 5. 1521 ebd. Der aus einer Straßburger Ratsherren- und Gastwirtsfamilie stammende B. studierte in Basel klassische Sprachen und Jura (Lizentiat 1483/84); danach lehrte er hier Kirchen- und Zivilrecht sowie Poesie. Er promovierte 1489 zum Doktor beider Rechte, wurde Dekan der juristischen Fakultät (1492) und 1496 Professor für römisches und kanonisches Recht. 1500 kehrte B. nach Straßburg zurück; 1501 übernahm er das Amt des Syndikus, 1503 wurde er Stadtschreiber. Als Berater, Korrektor und Lektor war er wesentlich an der Baseler Buchproduktion zwischen 1480 und 1500 beteiligt (Editionen u. a.).
