Alexander McCall Smith is Professor Emeritus of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh and holds honorary doctorates from thirteen universities.

Ist ein Kleidungsstück von Natur aus intimer als ein anderes? Wenn man eine E-Mail nicht beantwortet, ist das dann so, als ob man eine Bemerkung eines Gesprächspartners übergeht? Solche und viele andere Fragen - häufig mit moralischen Aspekten bestückt - werden auch im dritten Band der Miss-Isabel-Roman-Reihe des schottischen Autors Alexander McCall Smith aufgeworfen. Oft bleiben sie unbeantwortet. Ebenso fraglich ist, ob die im Titel erwähnten schottischen Katzen, die im Buch kaum auftauchen, tatsächlich den Weg kennen, wenn Isabel Dalhousie aufs Neue versucht, sich mit allen möglichen ethischen Aspekten des alltäglichen Lebens auseinanderzusetzen, sich aber zugleich auch stets um das Wohlergehen ihrer Mitmenschen sorgt und kümmert. Die Handlung birgt im Grunde keinerlei Überraschungsmomente, mag von Zeit zu Zeit sogar ein wenig zäh erscheinen. Dennoch kann die Leichtigkeit, mit der der Autor durch sein Sprachrohr Isabel über Themen wie unerwiderte Liebe, Glaube oder die Moral des Bettelns philosophiert, manch einen Leser unterhalten. Und bekommt man auch nicht auf alle Fragen eine Antwort, so lernt man doch immerhin auf vergnügliche Weise etwas über die Problematik, die bei der Behandlung moralischer Thesen unweigerlich auftritt.
