This is the first book to provide a full and coherent introduction to the photography of Victorian Scotland. There are many books which deal with particular elements and individual photographers, which show the interest in the subject, but no book draws everything together to provide an understanding of the multi-faceted nature of photography and its integral connection with the innovative and often adventurous society of the time. This authoritative introduction provides a wide-ranging appreciation of early Scottish photography and argues that Scottish photography was in the vanguard of many international trends artistically and technically as it moved from the complex early technology of the specialist to the mass-market. Comprehensively illustrated with photography from the period, this is the most definitive and integrated appraisal of the quality, diversity and impact of photography in Victorian Scotland. Roddy Simpson is a photographer and writer and a tutor on early Scottish photography at the University of Edinburgh. He is a respected historian of Scottish photography and contributes regularly to academic and popular publications. Front cover: Queensferry Columns, Looking Through Bridge, Evelyn Carey, 1887. Back cover: The Pastor's Visit, David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson 1845. Both (c) The University of Glasgow Library, Department of Special Collections.
