Daniel G. Payne is Assistant Professor of English, SUNY-Oneonta, and is the author of "Voices in the Wilderness: American Nature Writing and Environmental Politics. "He is the director of the John Burroughs NatureWriting Conference at Oneonta. Richard S. Newman is Assistant Professor of History, Rochester Institute of Technology. He is the author of "The Transformation of American Abolitionism: Fighting Slavery in the Early Republic" and co-editor of "Pamphlets of Protest: An Anthology of Early African American Protest Literature, 1790-1860.
