In the Ayurvedic treatment, medicines consists of plant products, either single drug or in combination with others which are considered to be less toxic and free from side effects compared to synthetic drugs.Despite considerable progress in the treatment of diabetes by oral hypoglycemic agents, search for newer drugs continues because the existing synthetic drugs have several limitations. Plants hold definite promises in the management of Diabetes mellitus. There is great deal of evidences to suggest that the use of carefully chosen herbal remedies and dietary supplements to prevent and control the diabetes.The leaves of the plant Moringa oleifera Lam. (moringaceae) have been claimed to be useful in diabetic conditions but yet no scientific reports are available in this regard. Hence the plant is selected for scientific validation for the above said traditional claim.
