In addition, there's a resurgence of interest in poetry, and poetry in translation, in our times, due to an increasingly global world, where we deeply need to understand the overall trajectory of the past 500 years of the planet, stretching back to the explosion of exploration from Europe to conquer and colonize much of the rest of the planet. This is the journey that Christian Formoso's "The Most Beautiful Cemetery in Chile" takes us on. Centered in a single locale-the Strait of Magellan in Tierra del Fuego-it poetically evokes ancient myths, the journey of the conquistadors, the struggle for survival in what Sarmiento de Gamboa somehow convinced himself (and the king of Spain!) would be a fruitful paradise. From 300 ships and 3000 soldiers and potential soldiers, Sarmiento finally landed on the shores of the Strait with three ships and a little over 100 of his people remaining. Formoso starts with these ancient stories and deftly weaves them, via intense, ground-breaking language, forward through time and into our contemporary psyche. If we want to know "where we are now" in this 500-year-old history, not just from a scholar's viewpoint but through the perspective and vision of a compelling new voice of Latin American poetry, this book needs to be available to a wide range of English-language readers.

Christian Formoso (born 1971) is a Chilean and Magellan Poet. He has won several awards, among them the "Binacional Literary Award of Patagonia Chile-Argentina" (1998 and 2000), the "Municipal Award City of Punta Arenas" (2010), and the prestigious "Pablo Neruda Prize" (2010), granted by the Pablo Neruda Foundation. The jury that unanimously awarded him praised "the originality of his poetry, where he brings together the historical, the ethnic, the indigenous and the domestic. What stands out in his work is the Patagonian universe and his profound poetic vision of this world." He has published six collections of poems. The most recent is "bellezamericana" (Santiago de Chile, Cuarto Propio, 2014), and the most important until now is "El cementerio más hermoso de Chile" (Santiago de Chile, Cuarto Propio, 2008). His poems have been collected in anthologies and media in Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, France, Spain, Greece and the United States. Christian Formoso has a M. of A. in Hispanic Studies por Villanova U. (EEUU), a M. of A. in Hispanic Languages and Literature por Stony Brook University, NY (EEUU) and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Hispanic Languages and Literatures at Stony Brook University, NY (EEUU). In December 2014, he was one of the three poets chosen to represent Chile in the Guadalajara International Book Fair, in México.
