Olaudah Equiano, born around 1745 in the Igbo village of Essaka in present-day Nigeria, was captured and enslaved as a child. He was transported to the Caribbean and sold to a Royal Navy officer, adopting the name Gustavus Vassa. After enduring multiple sales, he purchased his freedom in 1766.As a free man in London, Equiano became a prominent abolitionist, joining the Sons of Africa, a group of Africans advocating against slavery. In 1789, he published his autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, detailing his experiences and the horrors of slavery. The book garnered significant attention, contributing to the abolitionist movement in Britain.Equiano's narrative was instrumental in influencing public opinion and policy, leading to the passage of the British Slave Trade Act of 1807. His firsthand account provided a powerful voice against the transatlantic slave trade. Equiano passed away on 31 March 1797 in Westminster, leaving a lasting legacy in the fight for human rights.
