Since the last several years, poverty, food deficit, hunger and the deep-rooted social inequality in terms of class, caste and gender contribute towards the majority of the children from poor households are being adversely affected and prevented from experiencing all levels of education in the rural villages of the mountainous Karnali region of Nepal. This book, therefore, aims to explore the impact of food insecurity on the education of rural children in Kaigaun and Rimi Village Development Committee of Dolpa district (Karnali region). The study provides an account of the food and educational situation as it exists today and the extent of food insecurity across different strata (class, caste and gender) of this rural study villages. The study highlights how and what ways food insecurity affects access of the rural children to education and what is being done to alleviate the situation. The study also analyses the impact of some recent solutions to the problem i.e. the Food Assistance Programme and Food for Education Programme. Because of its interdisciplinary nature it will be useful to social scholars, researchers, students, policy makers and development practitioners.
Autorenporträt
Mr.Hem Bahadur Rokaya has qualified for an M.A. in Social Anthropology from Stockholms University, Sweden and an M.A. in Rural Development from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. His academic research interest includes gender and development, food issues, rural livelihoods and education. His professional interest is to work in rural develolopment.
