The original aim of the schools was to enroll interested sons of serving soldiers of not less than 14 years of age into military life and so "to inculcate a family tradition into the force". In line with this aim, therefore, the first batch of thirty boys (known as the first Platoon) that were admitted into the school consist mainly sons of serving soldiers.
