The Hispanic Challenge to American National identiy tackles the issue of U.S identity in the light of the growing role played by the Hispanics. A multicultural USA is revealed as struggling to harmonize the diverse cultures that often engender clashes within society and at times seek to maintain the status of one culture as the dominant national one. WASP or western culture prevails in the USA and is regarded as a "superculture" to which all immigrants should conform in order to be viewed as Americans. Therefore, assimilation becomes central to the (re)-definition of Americanness and U.S national identity. What will become of WASP identity in the future? Will the Hispanics gain more visibility and power in the future? This work brings a good insight into the issue.
