This accessible yet rigorous collection of essays gives an authentic introduction to the greatest of Indian epic poems, the Mahäbhärata. Individual chapters on its major themes and symbolic dimensions will be appreciated by laymen and scholars alike, as they give keys to the meaning and universal relevance of the work. The author has brought together his knowledge of the West and his direct access to Indian traditional commentaries into a collection of essays which is at once refreshing and compelling.
