The fire, which destroyed not only a beautiful and ancient city but also a multicultural way of life that had blossomed there over centuries, occurred at the end of the war of independence led by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk against the occupying European countries. The story takes place in the period between World War I and the great fire that destroyed the city.

Autorenporträt
Loren Edizel was born in Izmir, Turkey, and has lived in Canada most of her life. Her novel, Izmir Hayaletleri (The Ghosts of Smyrna), was published in Turkey in 2008 by Senocak Yayinlari (translated by Roza Hakmen) and a short story The Conch appeared in Turkish translation as part of an anthology entitled Kadin Öykülerinde Izmir [Izmir in Women's Stories] (2009). The Imam's Daughter was published in Montreal Serai. She has recently completed a collection of short stories under the working title the confession. She currently lives in Toronto.
