There has been a tremendous need for an independent peer-reviewed medical journal which aims at the advancement of medical knowledge rather than promotion in Iraq. The New Iraqi Journal of Medicine, the first Iraq-international peer-reviewed medical journal was the first Iraqi Medical Journal to declare adherence to the internationally accepted standards of modern peer-reviewed medical journals. All the journal editorial policies were adapted from the policies of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), World Association of Medical editors (WAME), and the Committee on publication ethics (COPE). The journal in was first published in 2005 under the name "Al-Karkh Journal of Medicine". However, from the third issue of December 2005 the journal has become known as "The New Iraqi Journal of Medicine the official peer- reviewed medical journal of the Iraqi ministry of health". The journal was the first Iraqi medical journal to be included in SCOPUS, and until now(July, 2021), it is the only Iraqi medical journal that appeared in Scimago country journal ranking.

Aamir Jalal Al-Mosawi è medico consulente presso il Centro nazionale di formazione e sviluppo del Ministero della Salute iracheno e la Città medica di Baghdad. È stato capo della sede irachena del gruppo internazionale di scienziati Copernicus (2006-ottobre 2020). È anche membro del consiglio consultivo dell'Associazione internazionale dei collegi medici (IAMC), dal 2008.
