The "Doctrinal of Sapience" is William Caxton's translation of a French manual of religious instruction dealing with the basic elements of faith and containing well over a hundred exempla. It was printed in a single edition in 1489, of which there are thirteen copies. This first critical edition is accompanied by a scholarly introduction including source studies and a discussion of Caxton's translational technique, copious notes on the text and indexes to the exempla.
