The book starts of with the history of the the Aboakyer Festival of the people of Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana. What were the origins of the festival? Why the need for the hunt of the deer? How were ancient rituals modernized and why? The poem in the book, "The Deer Hunt" speaks about this Festival. One of the most magical elements of this poem is the fact that the ceremony being showcased is narrated through the point of view of a child. A child who must come from a regal lineage of some sort to be so close to the preparations towards the hunt.
