FREDERICK WHITTAKER (1838-1889), born in London, emigrated to the United States in 1850. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private and rose to second lieutenant. After the war, he became a professional writer and a popular author of "dime novels." In 1876, after Custer's death, Whittaker started writing an extensive and definitive biography, A Complete Life of General George A. Custer.
