The Anglo-Japanese Alliance was the first formal agreement of its type reached by a Western 'great' power with a non-Caucasian nation in the modern era. As such, it represented an important milestone diplomatically, strategically and culturally. Phillips Payson O'Brien is the Director of the Scottish Centre for War Studies and a senior lecturer in history at the University of Glasgow. His previous publications include British and American Naval Power: Politics and Policy 1900-1936, Technology and Naval Combat in the Twentieth Century and Beyond and articles in Past and Present and the Journal of Strategic Studies.
