Recently, the electric utility structure and priorities have changed significantly. The current focus is on non-wire solutions/alternatives (NWS/NWA), non-pipe solutions (NPS), demand response (DR), microgrids, transactive energy markets (FERC Order 2222), full electrification, cybersecurity & Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). Recently, the electric utility structure and priorities have changed significantly. The current focus is on non-wire solutions/alternatives (NWS/NWA), non-pipe solutions (NPS), demand response (DR), microgrids, transactive energy markets (FERC Order 2222), full electrification, cybersecurity & Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). The biggest challenge is how to attain the 30, 50, or 100% clean and renewable energy mandates by 2050 or sooner. In most cases, those aggressive goals were not set by local utilities; it is critical for utilities & different agencies to work together to attain this goal in a reliable, resilient, and environmentally-friendly manner, without burdening the customer. Many of us are blessed with reliable electric service & the desire for cleaner air and a sustainable planet; as technology advances, our attachment to electric power thickens. The future of fossil & nuclear power plants & the use of natural gas for fuel cells & distributed generation (DG) is not very clear. Without a reliable grid, life during the COVID would not be possible. This book addresses critical questions & key challenges associated with the expected renewable widespread (chapter 2) after briefly describing the traditional electric power system: generation, transmission, substations & distribution systems (chapter 1). This book will discuss: power generation, transmission & distribution systems, DERs' grid impact, distribution system of the future, DER resiliency, aging infrastructure DERs' performance during the system peak and cloud coverage, frequency market energy storage & spinning reserve, advanced reactive market, DERs & the distribution network design, the "Outlaw Grid", the rise of fast electronics (SVC/STATCOM), Elec Ahmed is the CEO/Founder of the Electric Bridge Consulting & 100% Energy Club. Ahmed is a consultant, Utility of the Future manager, electrical engineer, adjunct professor, author of four (4) books & PE courses, board member (5), coach & speaker with over two decades of field, planning, design, operations, project management, training, DERs' grid impact, energy efficiency, DSM/DR, EV/V2G, VVO/VVC, AMI, transmission & distribution load relief forecast, emergency response, best practice/benchmarking, smart grid, risk management, IT/OT, climate change mitigation studies, microgrids, GMS/EMS/DMS/ADMS/DERMS & NWS/NPS experience in generation, transmission, substations and distribution systems at Con Edison, PSE&G, PEPCO, and First Energy.
