Government cost containment policies, in particular,
fixed price reimbursement, has substantial influence
on the nature of market structure of the dialysis
industry and the ways dialysis facilities respond to
those policies as well as the facility performance of
efficiency. There exist however lack of information
on the relationships between the degree of market
competition, facility characteristics reflecting
differential behavior in achieving efficiency and
technical efficiency in producing dialysis treatments
in a non-price competitive market. This book
addresses the question "how do market structure and
facility conduct of dialysis providers relate to the
technical efficiency in producing multiple dialysis
outputs?" To do so, unlike previous research, a
conceptual framework is drawn from the perspective of
industrial organization theory and analyzed using the
techniques of Data Envelopment Analysis and
regression. Information provided in this book should
acquire an interest especially by health services
researchers and practitioners who are involved in the
dialysis industry and efficiency measurement, and
also students studying performance measurement in the
health care sector.
