The iwi comprises six hapu: Ng i Tamahaua, Ng ti Ira, Ng ti Ngahere, Ng ti Patumoana, Ng ti Ruatakena and Te pokorehe. In the 2006 Census, 12,072 people claimed an affiliation with Te Whakat hea. The iwi is traditionally centred in the area around the town of Opotiki.
