Gertrude Bell, geboren 1868 in Washington bei Newcastle, war Historikerin, Archäologin, Sprachwissenschaftlerin, Übersetzerin, Politikerin und Spionin - und eine großartige Schriftstellerin. Als Tochter des Stahlmagnaten und liberalen Politikers Thomas Hugh Bell in eine der reichsten britischen Familien geboren, schloss sie 19-jährig in Oxford ihr Studium der Neueren Geschichte ab: mit Bravour, aber ohne Titel - der stand in England bis 1920 Frauen nicht zu. Sie lernte Arabisch, Persisch und Türkisch und begann ab 1892 den Orient zu bereisen. Von 1915 bis 1925 hatte die "Königin der Wüste" als Beraterin von Winston Churchill eine Schlüsselrolle in der Neuordnung des gesamten Nahen Ostens inne. Über ihre Reisen nach Persien, Syrien, Ira und Palästina schrieb sie zahlreiche und sehr erfolgreiche Bücher. Sie starb mit 58 Jahren in Bagdad.
